North Carolina Recognizes Alcohol Awareness Month and the Dangers of Underage Drinking

Governor Cooper & Talk it Out NC Promote Initiatives to Reduce Underage Drinking in NC

RALEIGH, N.C. – (April 6, 2021) April is Alcohol Awareness Month in North Carolina. This month, Governor Roy Cooper and Talk it Out NC along with organizations like NABCA, CADCA, and PTTC are addressing the dangers and misuse of alcohol across our state and in our communities.

Talk it Out NC is the initiative to reduce underage drinking in North Carolina – teaching parents and teens about the importance of discussing underage drinking at a young age.

  • Studies show 10% of North Carolina teens have their first sip of alcohol by age 12
  • Teens in high-stress environments are twice as likely to turn to alcohol or other drugs in order to cope.
  • More teens die as a result of alcohol than any other illicit drug.

Prom season will be in full swing soon. While it may be one of the most exciting times of the year for teens – it may also be dangerous. Talk it Out encourages parents and the parenting community to sit down with their teen and start a conversation. ‘Take The Pledge’ together and assist in reducing underage drinking.

Talk It Out NC Ambassadors across North Carolina are working in their communities even more this month to spread the message and share important tools and tips. For more information on how to reduce underage drinking and start the conversation with a teen you love, visit talkitoutnc.org.

National Alcohol Awareness Month was established in 1987 to increase understanding of alcohol addiction and its causes. In addition, this month serves as an opportunity to share information about recovery and treatment options.
