Local Families Working to Keep Alcohol Off the Prom Guest List

NC Organization Urges Families to Take the Pledge to Keep Teens Safe at Prom

Raleigh, N.C. – (April, 17, 2019) – Just like spring flowers, prom plans are blooming for North Carolina high school students. Teens are focusing on dresses, tuxedos, parties, and in some cases – alcohol. The decision could be deadly. Statistics show that roughly one-third of alcohol-related teen traffic fatalities occur between April and June – the peak of prom and graduation season.

Talk it Out NC, a state-sponsored initiative to reduce underage drinking, focuses on starting important conversations between parents and kids. Prom planning is a good opportunity for parents and teens to sit down and discuss the risks and consequences of teen alcohol use.

This is also a perfect time for families to Take the Pledge to stop underage drinking and make sure teens get home safe on prom night.

“We want teens to celebrate with their friends and understand they do not need alcohol to keep the party going,” says Jeff Strickland, Programs Coordinator for the NC Initiative to Reduce Underage Drinking. “Parents who talk with their kids about the dangers of underage drinking and Take the Pledge as a family, can have an impact on a teen’s decision to enjoy prom without alcohol.”
